Google DeepMind is seeking a Senior Psychologist to join the Responsible Development & Innovation (ReDI) team. This role is pivotal in ensuring advanced AI models interact with people in healthy and developmentally appropriate ways, aligning with Google DeepMind's values. You will leverage your deep expertise in psychology to proactively identify and address potential ethical and well-being implications of AI technologies, engaging with senior stakeholders. The position requires intellectual agility to quickly grasp diverse topics and a strong foundation in psychological principles, particularly as they relate to human-computer interaction. While the primary focus is on developing internal guidelines and informing AI development, opportunities for external publication may arise.
Responsibilities
- Develop practical guidelines and frameworks informed by psychological principles and empirical data to ensure AI models promote positive outcomes and mitigate psychological harms.
- Convert frameworks into artifacts such as training datasets and evaluation protocols.
- Collaborate with model development teams to advise on and facilitate the creation and implementation of evaluation frameworks, defining key metrics, tracking protocols, and criteria for significant results.
- Stay informed about the latest research and emerging trends in psychology and AI's potential impact on users.
- Proactively identify and research potential psychological risks and ethical considerations arising from AI-user interactions.
- Integrate psychological insights into the AI development lifecycle by working closely with AI researchers, engineers, and product managers.
- Conduct thorough reviews of relevant academic literature and engage with internal and external experts to inform guideline development.
Requirements
- PhD in Psychology (Clinical, Developmental, Social, Cognitive), Education and Technology, or related fields.
- Significant research experience and publications on Human-AI interaction in areas such as affective science, cognitive science, child development, adolescent psychology, attachment theory, or social-emotional learning.
- Extensive prior experience working in a leading industry position.
- Strong understanding of ethical principles relevant to psychological research and technology application.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and contribute effectively to new and varied subjects.
- Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex psychological concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive and independent approach to identifying challenges and exploring research questions.
- Experience with ethical considerations in technology development and familiarity with AI concepts and technologies.
