Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Search Platform team, which is responsible for the search stack powering Claude. This includes the indexes, retrieval and ranking systems, and serving infrastructure for claude.ai, the API, and agentic surfaces. The team owns the end-to-end search experience, from index growth to retrieval quality and serving at scale. The role also has a product dimension, requiring collaboration with product, research, and infrastructure teams to define and build search-backed features and ensure a high-quality user experience.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the engineering team building Anthropic's search platform (indexing, retrieval, ranking, serving).
- Define and own the strategy and roadmap for the search platform.
- Oversee search quality, including evaluation, relevance measurement, and ranking improvements.
- Operate the platform at scale, balancing product, research, and training demands while ensuring reliability, low latency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Contribute to product decisions for the search experience and represent search in product discussions.
- Drive cross-team collaboration with product, research, and infrastructure partners.
- Participate in design reviews, incident follow-ups, and technical deep dives.
- Recruit, close, and retain strong engineers.
Requirements
- Significant experience managing engineering teams, including hiring and growth.
- Direct experience building or operating search systems at scale (indexing, retrieval, ranking, or query serving).
- Sufficient technical depth for hands-on involvement (design reviews, code reading, technical debates).
- Product mindset and comfort making product decisions.
- Track record of running high-scale, latency-sensitive production systems.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Experience recruiting and closing senior engineers.
- Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

- Annual compensation range: $320,000 - $405,000 USD
